2010 STATE QUALIFYING SWIM MEET

TO: Swim Team Coaches and Reps

FROM: Jodie Gilfillan, Recreation Supervisor

DATE: June 2, 2010

RE: COAST 2010

On behalf of Alpharetta Recreation and Parks Department (ARPD), I would like to invite you and your swim team to get involved in COAST 2010! COAST is an acronym for “City of Alpharetta Swim Team.” COAST is an all-star swim team that will compete in the Georgia Recreation & Park Association (GRPA) State Swim Meet July 30th and 31st in Carrollton, GA. ARPD wants to put together the finest team possible and we need your support!

Listed below are some important dates as they pertain to COAST:
· June 21 – Deadline for COAST coaching applications to ARPD
· June 24 – COAST coaching staff announced
· June 25-27 – Atlanta Swim Association (ASA) League Championship Meet at Georgia Tech – *qualifier for eligible COAST swimmers (Divisional Sessions are Saturday, June 26; Championship Session is Sunday, June 27)
· July 6 – July 29 – COAST practices every weekday at the Alpharetta City Pool
· July 30 – GRPA State Championship (10 & Under) at the Lakeshore Natatorium, Carrollton, GA
· July 31 – GRPA State Championship (11 & Over) at Lakeshore Natatorium, Carrollton, GA

The 2010 team shall be comprised of swimmers who meet one of the following eligibility requirements:
1) A member of the Alpharetta Sharks swim team
2) A member of a neighborhood swim team that is based in the City of Alpharetta
3) A member of a neighborhood swim team that is based in the City of Milton
4) A member of a neighborhood swim team that is based in the Milton High School District
5) A member of a neighborhood swim team that is based in the Alpharetta High School District
NOTE: Swimmers on the above-mentioned teams must reside in Fulton County AND must qualify at the ASA League Championship Meet.

It is my hope that you will support the COAST team this year and promote it to your swimmers. Eligible swimmers who are interested in qualifying for COAST must indicate their intent by placing AL-8 in front of their first name when submitting their entry form for the ASA League Championship Meet (Example: AL-8 Jodie Gilfillan). This will allow COAST staff to determine eligible swimmers on meet day.

Swimmers will qualify for COAST during their Divisional Session Meet on June 26th and Championship Session on June 27th. Because Alpharetta teams will be swimming in separate divisions this year, the complete qualifying results will not be available until after the large division session on Saturday evening and the championship results on Sunday. A COAST team representative will be at the ASA meet on Sunday during the Championship Session to register swimmers who qualified for COAST. You can also register the following week, June 28 – July 2, at the Alpharetta Community Center, 175 Roswell Street.

Swimmers age 7 years and older may qualify for COAST. The top 3 designated finishers in each event will qualify for the COAST team. In addition, up to 12 of the top freestyle finishers in each age group will qualify to swim freestyle relays for COAST.

Swimmers who qualify must commit and register for the COAST team at the Championship Session on June 27th or at the Alpharetta Community Center the week of June 28 – July 2. At the time of registration, ARPD must receive a completed Activity Registration Form (available on site), a copy of the swimmer’s birth certificate (if not already on file), a signed agreement form (on site) and payment for the state meet and team fees. The fee is $40 per swimmer (City resident) and $60 per swimmer (non-City resident excluding Alpharetta Sharks). Checks are payable to ARPD. This fee includes state meet entry fees, a t-shirt, a swim cap, and coaching.

Swimmers will be financially responsible for any scratch fees incurred for failure to show up at their scheduled state event(s).

I hope that you will choose to swim COAST! It will be fun, exciting, and challenging for the swimmers and all involved. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. Please feel free to share this information with anyone who might be interested!

Swimmers may qualify for the GRPA State team based on their performance in the July 1 qualifying meet. The State Team will be comprised of the following:

* The three qualifiers in each individual event will swim that event individually as well as on the medley relay in the State meet.
* The 12 qualifiers in the freestyle event will swim the free relay in the meet.

When making your entries it is crucial to consider several things:

1. The swimmer should be able to attend the State Meet at the end of July in Carrollton, Ga. Ages 7-10 compete on 7/30; Ages 11-18 compete on 7/31.

2. The swimmer should be able to attend most of the scheduled State Team practices from July 5 – July 29 to be held at the Chastain Pool. Ages 7-10 will practice from 8a-9a; Ages 11-18 will practice from 9a-10a.

3. Qualifiers and a parent should be able to attend the 20 minute team information session that will be held at the conclusion of the qualifying meet.

4. All entrants must provide a photocopy of their birth certificate to serve as a proof of age for the State Meet officials. A certified copy of proof of age is not required, a photocopy will suffice. GRPA requires this in case of age challenges – no other proof is accepted.

5. All entrants in the State Qualifying Meet must reside in the city limits of Sandy Springs or a portion of Fulton County not providing an opportunity to qualify for the GRPA state meet. This includes most of the Buckhead area within Fulton County.
